Commercial Solar & Battery in Bridgwater

The Brief

Mouldex, a business in Bridgwater, came to us for the first phase of a solar and battery project. After an initial assessment it was clear there were a few challenges that would shape what we could install. The first was that there was only a single-phase supply in the village. Combined with some pushback from the grid, that limited the inverter size we could put in.

What We Did

National Grid could not support the originally planned inverter size, so there was a negotiation to work through:

• Applied for: 8 kW
• National Grid suggested: 3.7 kW
• Settled on: 5 kW

Knowing we could only install a 5 kW inverter, we used battery storage to make the most of it. By adding batteries we were able to roughly double the size of the array, which is exactly what we did. The first building ended up with:

• 16 x 510 W Aiko solar panels, giving an 8.16 kW array
• 1 x 5 kW inverter
• 2 x 5 kWh Solax batteries

When it came to the refurbishment of the second building, we managed to get National Grid to say yes once again to a further 5 kW inverter. This time Mouldex used some panels they had acquired previously, which brought the array close to 10 kW. The second building was fitted with:

• 9 x Q Cells 410 W panels
• 13 x Q Cells 425 W panels
• 1 x 5 kW inverter
• 2 x 5 kWh Solax batteries

The Result

All in all, a happy customer. We are pleased with how the project turned out and glad we managed to overcome some real obstacles to get to a position where the customer is happy and we have an installation we are proud of. Pairing batteries with a constrained inverter size meant Mouldex got far more usable generation than the grid limit alone would have allowed.
