Solar & EV Charging in Weston-super-Mare

The Brief

After meeting Carol and Graham in Weston-super-Mare and assessing their needs, it was clear they wanted a system that would work around the fact they are out of the country fairly often. The system needed to earn its keep while the house was empty, and still cover them well when they were home and using more power.

What We Did

Following the assessment, we went with the following set-up:

• 8 x 460 W all-black Aiko solar panels
• 1 x 3.7 kW EcoFlow hybrid inverter
• 1 x Zappi EV charger

The customer decided against a battery in this instance, as they are earning through the Smart Export Guarantee. When they are away from the house they are using next to nothing, so almost all of the energy is sold back to the grid. That credit is then there to draw against during the periods when they are at home and using more than they are producing.

At Totum we thought ahead and installed a hybrid inverter, so if their requirements change in future they can add a battery without replacing the heart of the system.

The Result

A clean, all-black install that suits the way Carol and Graham actually live. While they are away, the panels quietly sell back to the grid and build up export credit. When they are home, that credit offsets the extra they draw. And because we fitted a hybrid inverter from the start, adding storage later is a straightforward upgrade rather than a rebuild. The Zappi charger rounds the system off, ready for an EV to charge from their own generation.
