The Brief

A young family in Taunton had just collected their first electric car and needed a home charger fitted before relying on public chargers any longer than they had to. The driveway runs alongside the side wall of the property with the consumer unit on the inside of that wall, which on paper looked simple. The household wanted a clean install, an OCPP-compliant unit so they would not be tied to one provider, and a fixed price agreed before the engineer turned up on install day.

What We Did

The work in summary:

• Free site survey: Inspected the consumer unit, confirmed earthing arrangement, measured the cable run, and checked the incoming supply rating. Quoted a fixed price in writing the same day.
• Charger selection: Recommended a 7 kW OCPP-compliant unit suited to the family's tariff and driving pattern, with the option to switch back-end provider in future without changing the hardware.
• Consumer-unit work: Added a dedicated 32 A circuit on a fresh way in the existing consumer unit, with the right RCD type and a notified isolator on the outside.
• Cable run and side-wall mount: Routed the supply cable through the wall close to the consumer unit, clipped the external run neatly along the brickwork, and mounted the charger on the side wall at a comfortable plug height.
• Commissioning: Earthing tested, RCD verified, charger paired with the homeowner's app, and a full charge cycle run end-to-end before handover.
• Paperwork: NICEIC notification, DNO notification submitted, and warranty registered. Customer left with the certificate and a written summary the same day.

The Result

A tidy install that does not look bolted on, an OCPP-compliant charger on a smart tariff that pays back faster than a tied unit would have, and a customer who has stopped paying public-charger rates. The cable run is clipped close to the wall and barely visible from the driveway. The consumer unit has the spare way labelled clearly, and we left the documentation for the next person who needs to look at it.
